Karnataka to Vaccinate School Teachers: With the Karnataka State Government drawing up plans for phased reopening of schools in the state, the State Government has decided to vaccinate all School Teachers in the state for COVID-19 before the reopening process is initiated. Karnataka State Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar confirmed the development saying that the decision has been taken keeping safety of teachers and students as the top priority. Dr Sudharkar also confirmed that the decision about vaccination of school teachers will be applicable to both government as well as private schools based in the state.

Priority Vaccination for School Teachers

In a tweet sent out from his official account, Health Minister noted that “The corona vaccine will be given on a priority basis to teachers and non-teaching staff of all government, aided and unaided private schools in the State for the early re-opening of schools keeping the future of children in mind,” Schools across the state were closed down as part of the lockdown measures initiated by the state government to curb the spread of COVID-19 during the deadly 2nd wave which broke out in April – May 2021.

Safety of Students and Teachers Top Priority

Reiterating the state government’s motto of keeping health, safety and wellbeing of both students and teachers as its top priority, Health minister said that priority vaccination of teachers will help the government to expedite school reopening process. With schools closed for major part of last year and even this year, students and parents have raised concerns about the academic loss incurred by them. While online classes are being held regularly, many feel that they cannot be a replacement for physical regular classes. Keeping in mind these views, the Karnataka State Government has decided to accord priority vaccination status to school teachers.
